Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a field that makes use of radioactive elements and radiopharmaceuticals not only for scanning various body organs but also for their treatment. The therapeutic options range from simple thyroid dysfunction to metastatic bone palliative treatment.

Department of Nuclear Medicine of BINO is providing state of the art diagnostic and theranostic facilities to the patients. NMD is equipped with one dual head SPECT and one SPECT-CT Gamma cameras. This newly installed SPECT-CT will enable us accurate localization and better differentiation of pathological findings from physiological findings. SPECT-CT has added diagnostic value over simple SPECT due to its CT portion leading to better diagnosis and hence better management of patients.

NMD is licensed with PNRA (Pakistan nuclear regulatory authority) which operates under the guidelines of IAEA (International Atomic energy Agency).

Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT)

ETT (Exercise Tolerance Test) room has a modern exercise treadmill for giving physical stress to the patients undergoing cardiac perfusion scans. The machine is coupled with an ECG machine for monitoring heart rate during the procedure.

Theranostic Facility

Theranostic Radionuclide therapy with RAI-131 is being provided to hyper thyroid and CA thyroid patients

Nuclear Imaging

Different static and dynamic studies are performed on these Gamma Cameras by the trained technical staff under supervision of qualified Nuclear Physicians, include;

  1. Thyroid Scan (Evaluation of functional status of thyroid enlargements)
  2. Bone Scan (Primary bone pathologies and metastatic work-up)
  3. Renal Scan (Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) and relative kidney function estimation)
  4. Cardiac Scan (Evaluate the cardiac perfusion status in both stress and resting conditions along with detection of wall motion abnormality)
  5. MUGA Scan (Determining cardiac performance and wall motion)
  6. Parathyroid scan (adenoma and carcinoma detection)
  7. I-131 Scan
  8. HIDA Scan
  9. Gastro-intestinal bleed studies (Identify the region of active GI bleeding and gastro-esophageal reflux)
  10. Meckel’s Scan (Diagnose presence of ectopic gastric mucosa)
